North Gregory Hotel

The grand North Gregory Hotel has long stood as a landmark in the heart of Winton. Its interior, restored with care, retains the fine art elegance that made it an award-winning masterpiece when built in the 1950s. Since its earliest days, the North Gregory has been woven into the fabric of Winton’s history. It was here, in 1895, that Banjo Paterson’s iconic ballad ‘Waltzing Matilda’ was first performed, cementing the hotel’s place in Australia’s cultural legacy. Over the years, it has been rebuilt multiple times, each version standing as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the outback.

Among its treasured features are the sandblasted glass-paneled doors, a creation of Daphne Mayo, one of Australia’s foremost sculptors, depicting the rich history of the region. The upstairs rooms echo the charm of a bygone era while offering modern comforts, including split-system air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and a bar fridge. A magnificent stairway—or a convenient lift—leads to the rooms and shared balconies, where guests can take in views of the picturesque main street with its grazing sheep and pelican sculptures, and the lovely beer garden with laughter and music on the wind.

After a day exploring Winton, sink into the warm embrace of the outdoor hydrotherapy spa, its mineral-rich waters drawn from the ancient artesian basin. As twilight deepens, the beer garden will set the scene for an evening of entertainment and true country hospitality with lush hanging greenery and festoon lights under the sky. Gregory North, Australia’s champion Bush Poet, takes the stage each evening in season, bringing the words of Banjo Paterson to life with wit, warmth, and even a touch of theatre. Afterwards, on select nights, enjoy live music beneath the stars, with talented Australian musicians providing a lively and welcoming atmosphere.

From fresh salads to hearty home-crumbed parmis and great Aussie steaks, the Gregory’s menu brings the tastes of the outback to every plate for lunch and dinner daily. Dine indoors in Daphne Mayo’s Dining Room, soak up the lively atmosphere of Banjo’s Beer Garden, or grab a meal to enjoy on the go.

More than a hotel, the North Gregory is a place of stories, music, and outback hospitality. Whether you’re here for a meal, a drink, or a stay steeped in history, you’ll find yourself in the heart of Winton’s enduring charm.
