In one of the few places in Queensland offering a personal guided tour from your very own Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service Ranger, these cave tours are not to be missed.
Ranger Mick and his team are passionate about sharing the magnificence of the caves and the wonderful work they do to protect these unique ecosystems.
“We never get tired of giving the cave tours—there’s just so much to see and talk about, you could spend all day in there.”
Ranger-guided tours are available in three different caves, and when asked which is his favourite, Ranger Mick said he gets this question a lot.“It’s impossible to pick just one,” Ranger Mick said. “All caves are distinct and geologically diverse with their own unique features and bragging rights. They each offer their own, completely different experience.
“Donna cave is unique with its false floors and different levels, as well as surprising cave decorations illuminated in the darkness—you get a very different experience in there.
“Trezkin cave is an absolute beauty with some stunning and unusual formations, particularly with the ‘chandelier’ and its striking cluster of stalactites.
“Because of its sheer size, labyrinth of passages and caverns, ancient marine fossils and numerous daylight chambers, Royal Arch gives you a completely different experience again. With no lights within the cave and everyone given their own hand-held torch, it’s a totally different perspective and kids just love it.”
Ranger tip: if you have the time, it’s definitely worth doing all three Ranger-guided cave tours—there are two and three cave tour packages, as well as single tour options. Book your tickets in advance from The Hub by phoning 4094 7111.
Choose your own adventure
There are three other caves you can explore without a guide—from the ‘easy’ graded, semi-open cave system of The Archways to the more ‘difficult’ graded Bauhinia and Pompeii caves where a high level of fitness is required. If you’re going to self-explore caves, make sure you go with another person, carry two torches and wear sturdy footwear and remember to tell someone about your plans.
