Windorah, located in Queensland’s outback, offers a feast for the senses, with vibrant red-orange sandhills, rich history, and the iconic Cooper Creek just minutes from town. Begin your adventure with a sunset visit to the sandhills, a short 10-minute drive west toward Birdsville. These vivid landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for photography or simply enjoying the colours of an outback sunset.

Cooper Creek
Cooper Creek, which inspired poet Banjo Paterson, is where the Thomson and Barcoo Rivers unite, forming an inland waterway that has supported life in the region for generations.
JC ruins
There are also ruins, mostly old pub sites, situated within about 90km of town. The JC ruins (they used to be part of the township of Canterbury) are situated about 80km west of Windorah on the Birdsville-Bedourie road. If you’re a history buff, you may enjoy wandering around the ruins and the historic cemetery with graves dating back over a century.
Spring Wildflowers
For those visiting in spring, the wildflowers in full bloom offer an unforgettable display. Follow the 12 km nature drive from Windorah, which winds along Cooper Creek and highlights 38 native tree species.
For an in-depth experience, pick up a guide at the Windorah Visitor Information Centre on Maryborough Street, where you’ll also find exhibitions and local photography.
History Trail
Dive into Local History at the Whitula Gate Museum. The museum is a must-see, with its historic 1906 slab hut and the “Cooper Queen,” a sturdy steel-hulled boat once used to ferry supplies across the creek. Around town, you’ll also find landmarks like an old water bore, charming churches, and a private residence that once served as the courthouse.
Walking Together Park
Windorah’s Walking Together Park showcases the creativity of local artist Margaret Stevenson, featuring a mosaic yellowbelly and life-size animal sculptures crafted from steel and barbed wire. Kids will love the giant snakes-and-ladders mosaic in Rabig Park beside the visitor information centre. Pick up a giant dice from the information centre and let the whole family enjoy a game!
