Nestled in the heart of Queensland’s outback, Ilfracombe stands as a living testament to Australia’s pioneering spirit. Established in 1891 as a vital transport hub for the expansive Wellshot Station—once the world’s largest sheep station by stock numbers—this small town, affectionately known as the “Hub of the West,” offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the nation’s rich pastoral heritage.
A journey Through Time
A stroll along Ilfracombe’s main street reveals the Lynn Cameron Machinery Mile, an impressive open-air museum stretching over a mile. This collection showcases historical machinery, including a rare 1917 Ruston Proctor Tractor and the unique “Steam Devil” excavator from 1880, reflecting the innovative spirit of early settlers.
Nearby, the Wellshot Centre delves into the history of Wellshot Station, highlighting its 1892 world record of shearing 425,000 sheep in a single season. Visitors can also explore Oakhampton Cottage, a replica of an early station residence, and Romani Hall, dedicated to Australia’s Light Horsemen, offering deeper insights into the region’s past.
Langenbaker House – Steeped in History
A very special attraction is Langenbaker House, a teamster’s cottage that was one of the first homes in Ilfracombe. What makes it totally fascinating is that the home was owned by one family for a century and inside hardly a stick of furniture has been moved since 1920. It was one of the first homes in Ilfracombe and was the residence of Harry and Mary-Ann Langenbaker and their 11 (yes, 11!) children.
Artesian Spa and Barbie
For those seeking relaxation, the Ilfracombe Artesian Spa offers a soothing experience in the mineral-rich waters of the Great Artesian Basin. Located within the Ilfracombe Memorial Park, visitors can unwind in the spa or take a dip in the 20-meter swimming pool, all while surrounded by the tranquil ambiance of the outback..
Post Office Building
The 100-year-old post office/ library offers daily Australia Post services. EFTPOS is available and there is a comprehensive gift shop with items for any occasion.
Well travelled Wellshot
The Wellshot Hotel, established in 1890, remains a cornerstone of Ilfracombe’s community life. Preserved in its original state, this historic pub invites guests to experience genuine outback hospitality. With its unique wool-press bar and hearty meals, the hotel serves as a gathering place for locals and travellers alike, embodying the enduring camaraderie of the bush.
The Twelve Mile
Discover a magnificent example of 19th century bush craftsmanship when you visit the Twelve Mile. Thousands of naturally formed flagstones were meticulously placed to form a leak-proof reservoir. The overshot was constructed by hand in the 1890s. Once a watering stop for Cobb and Co, it is now close to picnic tables and camping grounds.
Interpreting history
The Wellshot Centre, which is the town’s visitor information centre, tells the story of one of Australia’s greatest sheep stations, Wellshot Station. The centre traces the history and development of the station from its early settlement, how it was formed and how people lived and worked there. Wellshot Station gained a world record in 1892 for shearing the largest number of sheep off the same property in one season – 425,000 sheep!
In the grounds, look through an authentic shepherd’s hut, and also the town’s original jail cell which was built in 1901 and used for 70-plus years.
