Agate Creek Camping Ground, nestled among the trees by the creek, is the perfect place to relax and unwind and forget about the stresses of modern-day life. The area is world renowned for agates of superb colours and patterns and is very popular with fossickers, some staying for weeks and even months. Along with agates, thunder eggs, quartz, citrine and amethyst crystal can also be found in the area.
There are a number of tracks throughout the fossicking field if you wish to explore the area more, where you will be able to view some amazing sandstone formations, or you may even come across some brumbies!
Agate Creek Camping Ground is approximately 70km south from Forsayth, which is the nearest town, so make sure you bring plenty of supplies.
Cobbold Gorge, owned and operated by Simon and Gaye Terry, offers up its beauty and its secrets only through guided tours. The Gorge Tour departs at 10.00am throughout the season until October 31. In winter, a 1.30pm tour is also offered. The three-hour tour includes a walking visit to the grave of pioneer John Corbett and a walk to the top of the escarpment for freshwater crocodile viewing. The boat cruise travels 600 metres of the waterway and gives you the chance to experience the eerie silence and spectacular beauty of Cobbold Gorge.
Cobbold Village offers warm, country hospitality with accommodation, a licensed bar, restaurant and coffee bar.
Of course, you can follow the bitumen road from Georgetown to Forsayth (less than an hour’s drive) and organise a transfer to Cobbold Gorge so you don’t have to take your car off the sealed road – then head back to Georgetown to continue your journey to Mount Surprise.
But if you don’t mind some gravel road driving, the 43km of formed gravel from Forsayth to Cobbold will be a breeze. When you return to Forsayth, take the scenic shortcut to Mount Surprise via Einasleigh.
If you’re coming from further afield, it’s six hours from Cairns or Townsville, five hours from Hughenden or Charters Towers.
From Hughenden or Charters Towers, visit via The Lynd Junction and Einasleigh. The Lynd to Cobbold this way is 185km, and all but 40km is gravel. If you’re not keen to drive at all, there are other ways to get here. Bus services are available from Cairns to Georgetown and you can arrange day tours to Cobbold Gorge from Georgetown or Forsayth.
